Macular degeneration occurs when the macula (the
central portion of the retina) degenerates. It may be

and blood vessels of the macula. It is a leading cause of
vision loss and blindness in those 65 years of age and
older. It's also commonly known as AMD or ARMD
(age-related macular degeneration). It's believed that
AMD can be retarded by eating a diet rich in antioxidants
as well as zinc.
