Gallbladder problems
There are a number of common gallbladder
problems, including:
Gallstones (sometimes spelled
gall stones). These are pebble-like masses that form in
the gallbladder common bile duct from hardened cholesterol.
There may be one large gallstone, several small ones, or man,
many gallstones no bigger than a grain of sand. A gallstone is
also called a cholelith.
A "gallbladder attack" is a
term used for an inflammation of the gallbladder. A gallbladder
attack often occurs after a big, fatty meal because the
digestive system is suddenly stressed as it tries to process a
large amount of fat. A gallbladder attack causes severe, steady
upper abdominal pain. It is also known as cholecystitis.
Gallbladder cancer is a term
often used to describe cancer that may begin either in the
gallbladder or the bile duct.
A well balanced low-fat diet is the best way
avoid gallbladder problems. Unfortunately, the only option
available for someone with gallbladder disease is
gallbladder removal.
About hal a million people a year in the United States alone
have gallbladder surgery.
