Hepatitis B vaccine
A hepatitis B vaccine has been developed. It is
recommended for use by
-
U.S. residents who work in health-care fields
(medical, dental, laboratory, or other) where they
may be exposed to human blood that contains the
hepatitis B virus,
-
all unvaccinated children and adolescents under the
age of 19,
-
heterosexuals who have had more than one partner in
the last 6 months or have recently had a sexually
transmitted disease,
anyone who uses injection drugs,
-
anyone traveling to an area that has an
intermediate to high prevalence of hepatitis B.
Vaccination should begin prior to travel (6 months
is recommended) and be completed before
departure.
Sharing personal care items that might have blood on them, like
razors and toothbrushes, could transmit the hepatitis B
virus.
Getting a tattoo or having any body piercing
done can result in hepatitis B transmission if the tools have
been previously used on someone who has been infected with
hepatitis B.
If you are a health-care or public safety
worker, always follow recommended precautions for handling
needles and other sharp instruments. Also be sure to use
recommended barriers.
Pregnant women should be tested for hepatitis
B.
Infants born to mothers who have hepatitis B
should receive hepatitis B immune globulin and vaccine within
12 hours after birth.
Finally, if you have or have had hepatitis B,
the Centers for Disease Control recommends that you shouldn't
donate blood, tissue or organs.
