Hepatitis C prevention

There is not a vaccine available for hepatitis C prevention.

Immune globulin is helpful for a hepatitis A infection, but it does not destroy the hepatitis C virus and does not prevent a hepatitis C infection.

Hepatitis C is a blood-borne virus, so hepatitis C prevention means avoiding avoiding contact with human blood.

Hepatitis C prevention tips

Hepatitis C prevention is mainly a matter of common sense.

If you don't have hepatitis C

  • Do not inject illegal drugs.
  • Do not share toothbrushes, razors or other items that might have blood from a person infected with hepatitis C on them.
  • Anyone getting a tattoo, or having cosmetic body piercing done should seek assurances that all instruments being used are thoroughly and properly sterilized.  Similarly, they should make sure anyone handling instruments washes their hands, wears latex gloves, and disinfects surfaces in the area.
  • If you have acupuncture done, make sure the needles are properly sterilized.

Travelers should be especially careful in developing countries. Medical, surgical, and dental equipment is not always sterilized properly, and is sometimes reused.

Travelers should also seek assurances that any blood used for a transfusion has been screened and is safe.

If you have hepatitis C

  • cover any cuts, scrapes, and blisters on your skin so the virus doesn't spread to others through accidental contact,
  • dispose of blood-soaked items such as used bandages and Band-Aids,
  • don't donate blood or sperm,
  • thoroughly wash your hands and any object that comes in contact with your blood. Use soap and water, and
  • don't share toothbrushes, razors, nail clippers, diabetes supplies, or anything that might have your blood on it.

Hepatitis C prevention and intimacy

Hepatitis C is rarely transmitted through sexual contact, but it can happen. Individuals having sex with multiple partners are at risk, especially if they don't use safe sex practices.
