Stomach cancer prevention basics
Stomach cancer prevention is largely a matter of common
sense. Although there are certain stomach cancer risk
factors that are beyond a person's control, most risk
factors are related to lifestyle and diet.
Stomach cancer prevention has come a long way since
the 1930's, when stomach cancer was the most common type
of cancer in the United States. But since then, Americans have
been reducing their intake of the kinds of foods
that probably cause an increased stomach cancer risk:
namely heavily salted, pickled and smoked foods. This has come
about because of the widespread availability of
refrigeration.
Diets which include a lot of nitrates, like hot dogs,
certain deli meats, bacon, ham and red meat probably lead to a
higher risk of stomach cancer.
Foods cooked at a high temperatures create a by-product
known as acrylamide, which may be a carcinogen, or cancer
causing substance.. French fries, potato chips, cereals, and
processed bread products contain acrylamide.
As with many forms of cancer, a balanced, healthy diet seems
to be helpful in stomach cancer prevention. Certain fruits or
vegetables tomatoes, sweet potatoes and carrots are believed to
help prevent stomach cancer.
Drinking clean water is believed to help in the stomach
cancer prevention process because contaminated or dirty water
might contain a certain kind of bacteria called Helicobacter
pylori, or H. pylori.
There has been increased evidence lately that people who are
obese have a higher risk of getting stomach cancer. So, weight
loss would be a logical step in a program of stomach cancer
prevention.
Smoking and tobacco use are generally regarded as stomach
cancer risk factors by the medical community. Avoiding tobacco
products is another step toward stomach cancer prevention.
Completely removing all risks of getting stomach cancer is
impossible for some people though because of genetic,
environmental, and occupational factors. For more
information on these, click on stomach cancer risk factors.

have regular checkups and to know what the symptoms of stomach
cancer are.

than treating stomach cancer.
