What is stomach flu?
Stomach flu is not actually a form of influenza, but is
actually caused by a virus that gets into the digestive system.
Stomach flu is also known as viral gastroenteritis. It is the
second most common illness in the U.S., largely because it's
extremely contagious.
There are several types of the stomach flu virus:
- rotaviruses,
- noroviruses,
- adenoviruses,
- sapoviruses, and
- astroviruses.
These viruses cause inflammation in the lining of the
stomach and intestines. As a result the stomach and intestines
don't function as they should, and food often passes through
them without being properly digested.
Stomach flu generally lasts one to three days, but it may be
as much as two weeks before bowel function returns to
normal.
Stomach flu virus transmission
There are a number of different ways the stomach flu virus
spreads. You can get it through direct contact like shaking
hands, kissing, or even bumping into someone in a crowded
place.
One of the most common ways to spread the stomach flu virus
is by sharing eating utensils, food, or drink.
