Stomach gas treatment

Stomach gas treatment varies with the type of stomach gas you're experiencing. It's one thing if it's stomach gas that's actually in the stomach, usually as the result of swallowing too much air or eating and drinking a lot. Stomach gas can usually be expelled by belching or burping, although at times, you need help to make that belch or burp happen.

But gas that's produced at the far end of the digestive tract and must be expelled as flatulence usually requires treatment of a different sort.

Keep in mind that everyone's digestive system is different. Some people naturally produce more stomach gas than others. A stomach gas treatment that works like gangbusters for one individual may do little or nothing for another. Some common sense trial and error, paying close attention to possible causes and results, will help you determine the best stomach gas treatment for you.

Let's start with some general stomach gas treatment options first.

Stomach gas treatment through diet

If gas at any stage of the gastrointestinal tract is a recurring problem, the first place to look is the plate of food in front of you. Unfortunately, the very foods nutritionists recommend as part of a balanced, healthy diet, are sometimes gas-producers. These include certain fruits and vegetables, grains, and milk products.

High-fat foods tend to produce gas, along with bloating and discomfort. Food that are fatty stay in the stomach longer, and don't pass out of the stomach for quite some time. When the stomach empties faster, some stomach goes along with it.

Stomach gas treatment with nonprescription medicines

Over-the-counter medicines can help reduce discomfort and symptoms of stomach gas. Antacids with simethicone are effective because simethicone helps small gas bubbles bind together into bigger ones, making them easier to expel. Simethicone is found in brand names products like Mylanta, Maalox, Di-Gel and others.

Certain digestive enzymes like as lactase supplements make it easier for the digestive system to handle carbohydrates. "carbs," as they've become know, normally cause gas.

Beano, helps the digestive system by providing an enzyme the body often lacks. This enzyme helps digest the sugar in beans and many gas-producing vegetables. However, Beano doesn't work on gas created by lactose or fiber.

Stomach gas treatment with prescription medicines

Gas can sometimes be produced by serious medical conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome. If you have an illness or a condition that causes an unusual amount of gas, talk to your doctor about the kind of stomach gas treatment prescription that may be right for you. Doctors may prescribe medicines to help reduce symptoms, especially for people with a disorder such as IBS.

Stomach gas prevention by reducing swallowed air

We all swallow a certain amount of air when we eat, especially if we eat fast. If we're under stress, we often tend to breath rapidly and draw in breath through our mouths. This sometimes causes a buildup of air in the stomach. Those who sip drinks through a straw, eat hard candy, chew gum, and smoke also tend draw a lot of air into their stomach.

Finally, poorly-fitting dentures that result in difficulty chewing cause people to swallow air.

Doing any of the above can result in chronic belching and an excess of stomach gas.
