Stomach Basics

The stomach is a pear-shaped organ (some describe it as "funnel-shaped"), between the liver and the spleen, located under the diaphragm. Five layers of tissue make up the stomach. The stomach provides a reservoir for holding food and allowing the digestion process to begin.

The stomach is somewhat elastic because it changes size and shape depending on the amount of food inside. The average adult human stomach is generally about a foot in length (about 30 cm) and about six inches (15 cm) from front to back at its widest point. The stomach holds about one quart, or a little more than .9 liters, of food and liquid.

Stomach function

Digestion or "food processing" is the main stomach function. Food enters the stomach through the mouth, and then the esophagus. Once food is in the stomach it starts being broken down by gastric juices, or "stomach acid.". After the stomach begins the digestive process, the food is passed out of the stomach and into the small intestine.

Stomach problems

The stomach can be afflicted by a number of disorders, diseases and problems, including stomach cancer and stomach ulcers, which are serious. In addition, there are lesser conditions related to the stomach which can cause temporary discomfort, including stomach flu, stomach bloating, stomach gas, and excess stomach acid. All of these are covered in this website, so if you're having stomach trouble of any kind, you should be able to get the basic information you want here.
